“My mission is to help as many people as possible find their authentic voice. Singing can be used as a healing tool, and many of my adult students tell me my classes are more than just singing lessons: they’re more like therapy. I use singing as a mechanism to open up blockages to students’ own authenticity, and we teach vocal techniques and performance skills that build confidence and self-awareness that lasts a lifetime.”

Karen Knowles

About

The Karen Knowles Singing School began operating in September 2004 and is a leader in providing singing training for children and adults. Our main location is in Surrey Hills, Melbourne, and we now offer online vocal coaching via Skype and Facetime.
Our aim is to ensure that every student comes away from each class or workshop with the joy of self-expression.

The school has a range of classes and workshops suitable for children, beginners, adults and professionals. Karen’s extensive background and vocal training includes 7 years classical training, 5 years music theatre training and a 30-year performance career spanning television, theatre and concert performances. All senior teachers have extensive training and are performers in their own right.

Karen Knowles Singing School Classes

Founded in 2004, The Karen Knowles Singing School has helped hundreds of people become confident singers. We’ve seen some of our students fulfil lifelong dreams of starting their own bands, performing at local venues and being accepted into prestigious schools, including WAAPA.

The classes and workshops focus on finding your own authentic voice, and our students build confidence in both singing and life skills. We aim to achieve results quickly and every class is customised to the individual singer’s goals.

We offer a range of classes for all levels and ages, including group singing classes, individual one-on-one classes, online vocal coaching and a range of workshops. We also offer customised classes to make sure your experience is right for you.

Individual Coaching

Individual coaching offers the most tailored training to reach specific goals and needs, such as an audition or upcoming performance. We cover vocal skills, breathing, tone, placement and range, and explore the style of music your voice is naturally suited to.

Small Group Classes

Our small group classes run for 30-45 minutes, depending on the age group. They’re a great way to learn vocal skills and have fun singing with students of a similar age. Classes are available for adults and children, and help boost confidence for new singers.

Online Vocal Coaching

Our online vocal coaching via Facetime and Skype allows students to participate in classes from the comfort of their own home. Class times range from 30-60 minutes and are a great introduction to individual coaching with Karen and Liz.

Individual adult classes with Karen

Thank you Karen for giving me your constant encouragement and support and for giving me the confidence to believe in myself. Your genuine interest and guidance has been invaluable. To learn from someone whose own talent is awe-inspiring and whose nature is so sincere, I consider myself to be so very privileged to have you as my mentor. My thanks also for guiding me to my first real experience in a recording studio and for helping me to take the first big step in my singing career. I have always had this passion and a secret desire, but never the confidence to take the first step – for this I am grateful to you. Richard

Individual adult classes with Karen and Working with Musicians workshop

Karen’s positive, intelligent and encouraging teaching style has seen my daughter improve dramatically.  Her lessons are always fun, and she has brought out the best in my child.  She looks forward to her lessons each week. Susie

Mum of junior student , Individual classes with Karen, Surrey Hills and Junior Songwriting Workshop participant

Karen, could I take this opportunity to thank you for the work you have been doing with Tom. We have tried three singing teachers before finding your School. In one term, Tom has improved out of sight compared to anything he has managed with the other three. He sings all the time at home and as I listen to him sing upstairs he sounds tuneful, strong and confident. He looks forward to his lesson every week. Many thanks. Bernadette

Mum of student , Individual classes with Karen, Surrey Hills

I thought the working with musicians workshop was fantastic fun. I’ve been feeling fabulous all weekend (and still). Unbelievable how much positive energy I got from that, I feel like I had a face lift! Eloisa

As I drive home I think what a shame I have to wait a whole week for the next class. I love it! The experience is enlivening. Jenny

Workshops

1. Working with Musicians Workshop

A favourite with regular students, the Working with Musicians workshop is held in a professional rehearsal room with a sound system so participants can immerse themselves in the ‘real thing’.  Karen Knowles and the band members lead participants through the process of singing as a musician.

This workshop is suitable for participants wishing to experience the first steps of improvising with musicians and taking the next steps towards performance. It’s also a great thrill for participants who have always dreamed of singing with a live band.

The Working with Musicians workshop is held four times per year. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.

2. Junior Song Writing Workshop

A songwriting workshop for younger students

Songwriting is an important part of finding a performer’s own authentic self expression. During the workshop, student’s ideas are transformed into musical form with the students leading the way so that they can hear their own songs come to life.

This 2-hour workshop is run by Karen Knowles and Nick Roy, an accomplished singer/songwriter who has been performing and producing music for many years. This workshop teaches students to relax into themselves and feel brave enough to express their authentic selves. Learn tools and support to move beyond the nerves and blocks that stand in the way to finding your own voice and expressing that through songwriting.

3. Corporate and Community Group Singing Workshops

We offer group singing workshops for community groups, not for profit organisations and corporate clients who wish to run a singing workshop as part of their corporate bonding program or as part of their regular team building exercises. Participants are encouraged to be mindful and present to what is really going on in a room. As such, creating new music together is a great way to learn new skills and at the same time embody a team building exercise!

Karen Knowles leads the adult group workshop working with clients to tailor the class to a specific theme or the long or short term team goals. We start very gently with warm ups and then lead participants through a process to a “vocal soundscape” where they learn how to blend their voices and work together as a team.

No previous experience is necessary. These workshops are designed to be energising, empowering and enlightening. To discuss the number of participants, the venue and other requirements please contact us.

Please contact us regarding venue suggestions.

As a guide, for a very small group we can use existing facilities. Preferably its best to run vocal workshops in a space with a wooden floor (a rehearsal studio, warehouse, a yoga studio or a space like City of Melbourne’s Art Play along Birrarung Marr).

For participants who would like to get acquainted with some basic singing techniques prior to the workshop please see our Starter Pack.

We are happy to arrange a prior half hour or hour consultation so we can learn more about your organisation and your requirements and we can tailor content according to your needs.

Have questions?

karen_knowles_singing_school_logo
WHERE DO I START?
For children:

A child under 6 is generally best to start in a small group preferably when they are able to read and have sufficient focus. A child over 7-8 may start individual coaching if they wish to learn vocal technique. If they are interested in singing more from a social enjoyment angle then creating or joining a group class with children of similar ages is best. Where we are not currently running a group class for the student’s age group sometimes the student commences individual classes and can swap back to the group class when new students of the same age are enrolled

For adults:

It depends on how advanced you are and what your previous experience is. Generally we start with vocal technique and a few “get to know you” sessions that allow us to understand the type of voice you have, what your aspirations are and what you would like to take from classes. We build in performance skills, developing your own style after a thorough grounding in technique. In this way you have all the support and skills you need so it’s all second nature when it comes time to perform. We suggest the working with musicians workshops are a great adjunct to regular classes – it gives students the ability to take their sole focus on the vocals into the real world of singing and working with a live band, building their skills working with a microphone and working with dynamics and other layers of expression that are as important as the vocals.

WHEN WILL I BE READY FOR THE WORKING WITH MUSICIANS WORKSHOP?
You don’t need to be an advanced student to participate in the working with musicians workshop. You will need to know 3 songs well that we can work on with the band. It’s a very nurturing environment, a small group and loads of fun. All participants say they learn so much every session and every session is different. So just bring an open mind, a willingness to play and make sure you know 3 songs well so you feel free to adapt to new ideas in the session. This workshop is not a performance so there is no sense of “doing it right” – instead it’s all about learning and exploration. We look forward to working with you!
WHAT IS THE "HOLISTIC VOCAL GROUP" CLASS?
As the name suggests this is not your average choir or group singing class. While we do some initial work on vocal technique the aim of the class is predominantly for wellbeing, relaxation, working with growing self awareness and working with the body as an instrument.
DO YOU TRAIN FOR VCE MUSIC EXAMS?
Yes, with our teacher who teaches on Sunday at Surrey Hills.
