Holiday & Weekend Workshops

We run our Holiday Workshop Program during some School Holidays. Our dates run according to public school term dates.

The content of these workshops is a great compliment to the regular term classes and the workshops are equally suitable for students just starting out.

Two half day Workshops (for 5 to 7 year olds):

This workshop is designed for the little ones as a soft entry into the world of music. During the workshop the singing and music components are interspersed with other activities, such as story writing and drawing, so the children remain engaged and don’t tire too quickly. Group vocal work is covered as well as individual or duo performances as appropriate for the participants. There is a short performance for parents and friends of the repertoire they have learned at the end of the workshop.

Two Day Workshops (for 8 to 16 year olds):

The two day workshop is led by Nick Roy (professional singer/songwriter and teacher).

This workshop is designed to challenge students vocally and musically and assists in the growth of the students’ musicianship as well as assisting them with movement which is such an important part of performing.

Students learn vocal skills and as a group, explore rhythms, develop aural, harmony and pitch skills, learn new world music and gospel / acappella repertoire in a fun and interactive environment. Students also work on their choice of individual repertoire and receive a written vocal assessment during the course of the workshop. The workshop provides students with a wealth of knowledge and some performance experience and significantly increases students’ confidence.

Group work assists students mastering pitch skills and the focus on performance skills adds another dimension to the content. The content of these workshops is a great compliment to the regular term classes and the workshop is equally suitable for students just starting out. There is a performance held for friends and family at the conclusion of the workshop.

Four Day Workshop - Songwriting (for 12 to 18 year olds):

Led by Nick Roy with input from Karen Knowles, this workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the art of Songwriting, covering a range of aspects from the initial creative process to the ultimate performance of original material. The course requires no previous musical experience, just an open mind and a keen interest in songwriting. Over the four days Nick will cover the analysis of different song styles, song structure, brainstorming, use of language (alliteration, rhyming etc), musical devices, simple chord structure, instrumentation etc. through to song performance and delivery.

WEEKEND WORKSHOP

Working with Musicians Workshop (for 10 to 18 year olds)

Weekend Working with Musicians Workshop - held in a professional rehearsal room so participants can experience the real thing this workshop takes the next step for more advanced students. Senior teachers Karen Knowles and Nick Roy will lead participants through the process of singing as a musician, amending vocal delivery and dynamics according to the input and changes in musical structure offered by the small band. A great challenge suitable for participants wishing to experience the first steps of improvising with musicians and taking the next steps towards performance. Held on Saturday 9 May 2009. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. Suitable for students aged 10 to 18.

Please bring lunch, drink, snack and 4 photocopies each of sheet music of 3 of your favourite songs.
